Politics 03:16
Every young man pins his colours to a mast Piles the liars high, smiles, and lights a match But I'm an old man now, settled in my ways I learned that mixing drinks and politics won't pay I remember that December when school books would speak the truth to me Set my hindsights on that dark night of empires and insecurity I will prosper from the gospel of men and the gods they thought they'd be Choose my colours and my lovers too quickly, and oh so carelessly But I will wake my soul Or at least the part of it I can't disown And I will take the roll call of all the fighting truths I can't let go
2.
Here we will stand under flags dyed to red This one's from the heart, but it aims for the head We'll stand behind barricades built from the furniture we took from home The rivers run red with the words that we said and the blood that we owe Man makes a martyr and Christ makes a saint Tie colours to masts, but they change with the paint So now we must shoulder our rifles and answer our calling to arms It'll be over by Christmas, then back to the family and back to the farm They say that this country, it speaks to your soul Well that's just as well 'cause my body is broken and leaden with holes So stand up, bear your arms and bare your chest Bet your bottom dollar that this life is a test for the next The years bleed us dry but the penny won't drop As we kill off the sons that we raised with the crops The battle lines scored in the soil are too heavy with loss to ignore So it's on with the cap and the boots and the march to the end of it all
3.
Cemetery Sea 02:20
My last will and my testament Will be found in spray and in salted scent This wood might float but it won't hold fast So I raise a smile as I breathe my last I'll join the tide and I'll fill the swell With a headstone carved out of sand and shells There are no hymns down here, only songs sung soft To the rolling mass with the ships to toss Lay me down to sleep and bury me in an open grave in a cemetery sea Arrested by the seaside's glow, the penny arcades and the twilight shows Welcome to your very own graveyard home from home Sing forever more
